What You’ll Find in the Water This Season In summer, the Colorado River through Mesa County supports a mix of coldwater and warmwater species. As the days heat up, trout retreat to cooler, shaded stretches while warmwater fish become more active in open water and deeper pools. Brown Trout Found in shaded pockets, deeper runs, and behind boulders. Still catchable in summer with subtle presentations and cooler water. Rainbow Trout Most active in slower flows or near cooler inflows. Early mornings and shaded banks offer the best chances. Channel Catfish Reliable warm‑season residents. Look for them in slower, deeper water or near structure — perfect for relaxed evening fishing. Largemouth & Smallmouth Bass Common in backwaters, reservoirs, and warm, calm edges of the river.
